I t used to require a little more talent to capture a selfie. But whether or not you rate the skills of pop art master Andy Warhol, not many people could produce a self-portrait worth $30.1 million.
In true Warholian style, “Six Self Portraits” is a bank of close-up captures. It was produced in 1986 and features six images of the painter and was sold this week at an auction of post-war and contemporary art at Sotheby's in New York.
The silk-screen images contain identical images, each in a different colour, depicting Warhol in cherished "fright wig."
But the huge sales do not stop there. Just a day prior, Warhol’s “Race Riot” sold via Christies for $62.89 million, while “White Marilyn” went for $41.1 million.
Bidding will also start on a major Christie’s sale at the end of this month. The auction house is hosting its Andy Warhol sale from May 29 to June 10, featuring a unique set of works from the artist’s life.
From the collection of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Andy Warhol @ Christie’s: Eye Candy features 117 photographs, prints and drawings that give an insight into the artist's personal life.
Andy Warhol's "Three Self Portraits", produced in 1986 was valued at $17 million in 2008
