When it comes to sheer gaming volume, Macau has already chased Sin City under the betting table. “The Vegas of the East” takes around seven times more in casino revenues than the Strip, and is now looking to establish dominance with the impending arrival of one of the most expensive and lavish hotels ever built.

The 13 (also known as Louis XIII) is a self-proclaimed “all-villa” hotel that boasts 200 suites ranging from 186 to 2,787 square metres, all with round-the-clock butler service. Styled as a baroque-era French palace, each and every villa features a marble Roman bath beneath a vaulted ceiling with a crystal chandelier.

The ultra-luxe hotel is being built at a reported cost of US$1.4 billion, which breaks down to a cost of around $7 million per room. The 13 is slated to open by late summer, but made headlines back in 2014 when luxury entrepreneur and hotelier Stephen Hung ordered a record-breaking fleet of 30 bespoke extended-wheelbase Phantoms as hotel cars. “Macau is rapidly evolving into the luxury capital of the world,” said Louis XIII chairman, Stephen Hung in September 2014.

“We are honoured to have the opportunity to add to Macau’s many distinctions, the world’s largest fleet of Rolls-Royce Phantoms, including the two most luxurious vehicles Rolls-Royce has ever built,” he added. The 13 will also have an invitation-only L’Atelier where guests can buy “couture, bespoke and limited-edition products” from luxury brands and the only outpost of L’Ambroisie, a three-Michelin-star restaurant in Paris. Rates have not yet been revealed.
