Design Hotels have started strong in 2015 with another interesting boutique property. In addition to the upcoming “rough luxe” property in Rome, the designer hotels collection has recently announced another new member: The Serras.
The chic five-star property occupies the same space where Picasso had his first studio, which is where he painted Ciencia y Caridad (Science and Charity) in 1897.
The building itself dates back to 1846 and maintains the original Neo-Classical façade designed by Francesc Daniel Molina, though the rest of the hotel, with its 30 rooms and suites, has assumed a more updated aesthetic.
The interiors come courtesy of Spanish designer Eva Martinez, who has created an aesthetic than blends Catalan style with a modern New York-esque vibe.
The Serras is located on Passeig de Colom, which is a three-minute walk from Las Ramblas, making it the first five-star property on the waterfront in central Barcelona. The hotel’s rooftop bar overlooks both the Gothic Old Town and Port Vell Marina, which has recently undergone a EUR 125 million renovation.
Each guest will be assigned a guest relations manager who will remain on hand to orchestrate the entire stay. The hotel has also claimed it will be “low on rules”, which means relaxed meal times and check-ins augmented by a glass of Champagne.
When it comes to dining, Michelin-star chef Marc Gascons will be opening an informal restaurant consisting solely of locally sourced produce from both land and sea. Specialities include sea bass sushi and Galician beef tataki from the grill.
