Rail travel in Japan is already a must with the inter-metropolis bullet train darting across the country, but two new cruise trains will add a new level of luxury. Twilight Express Mizukaze, operated by JR West, is set to journey through the traditional and unspoiled Japanese landscape of West Japan in 2017.
The Twilight Express Mizukaze – launching spring 2017:

Visitors can observe the rich history and culture of Kyoto, Matsue, Izumo and Miyajima, and the beautiful natural scenery of the Sea of Japan, Mt. Daisen, and the Seto Inland Sea islands, with journeys embarking from Kyoto, Osaka and Shimonoseki stations.

The aesthetic is described as art deco meets the 21st century and just 30 passengers will have the run of 10 train cars, sharing a dining car and outdoor viewing platforms at each end. Menus will be overseen by top-class chefs, showcasing a variety of ingredients from along the route, and will be freshly prepared on board.

Train Suite Shiki-Shima – launching May 1, 2017:
A second train from JR East, Train Suite Shiki-Shima will offer luxury journeys departing from Tokyo’s Ueno station through the north-eastern region of Tohoku and up into Hokkaido.

The luxury train will provide prime views of Japan’s rich, beautiful natural scenery, and the local arts, crafts and foods of each region and will give passengers the chance to stretch their legs and explore areas along the route.

Destinations include Nikko Toshogu Shrine in Tochigi Prefecture, the Shirakami-Sanchi mountainous area in Aomori Prefecture and visits to the region’s onsen hot springs and iconic fish markets.
This duplex suite is something that London Underground commuters could only dream of. The rich, wooden accommodation appears to offer sleeping capacity for two, with ample space to dine and relax. The Zen-esque furnishings wouldn't look out of place at any five-star hotel – and it has the benefit of ever-changing views as the carriage cruises through the Japanese countryside.
