If you’ve always fancied yourself a fashion illustrator and sketched away happily as a child with your prized collection of Faber-Castell pencils, then the KARLBOX, a limited-edition collection of high-end drawing tools and artists’ supplies, will surely top your Christmas wish-list – though we can bet that some of you won’t be able to wait that long.
In one of the most unique creative collaborations of the year, fashion designer extraordinaire Karl Lagerfeld and the iconic German brand Faber-Castell have teamed up to release a highly desirable collection of 350 fine quality art tools for drawing and painting. Only the finest (repeat, only the finest) tools are included in this collection, which has been personally selected by Karl Lagerfeld to “symbolise the synergy between fashion, art and design”.

Think Albrecht Dürer and Polychromos colour pencils, highly pigmented Pitt Artist ink pens, Castell 9000 graphite pencils, watercolour brushes, erasers and sharpeners...the list continues. It all comes encased in a sleek black-lacquered beechwood box designed especially by Lagerfeld, the frame resembling a Chinese wedding cabinet with removable drawers to store your art supplies, sorted by colour shades, of course. What’s more, every one-of-a-kind KARLBOX has a serial number and certificate of authenticity – making no two alike.

Over the course of Lagerfeld’s illustrious career, the designer has used Faber-Castell products to create countless works of art. “To me, drawing is like breathing and writing,” he says. And while we are looking back, it’s impressive to think how long Faber-Castell has been doing its thing. Since 1761, the German company has grown into one of the most respected names in the art world – the company’s high-quality pigments impressing the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Paul Klee and Neo Rauch.

“Since I was a child in Germany, Faber-Castell has been known for its especially good quality,” Lagerfeld says. “That reputation remains just as true today, particularly for artist pencils.” Quality doesn’t come cheap, however. The price for this one-of-a-kind collector’s item? A cool €2,500 (US$2,822). Christmas lists at the ready...
