The government of Laos has approved plans to build the Xayaburi dam on the Mekong River despite strong opposition from neighbouring countries.
The river is already home to a number of dams across the border in China and residents fear that the new dam will dramatically affect fish stocks, which will have a huge impact on the livelihood of the locals.
The Mekong River is one of the world's most bio diverse rivers and is home to many species, which may come into danger should construction continue on the dam.
The project will cost in the region of US$3.5bn and is being entirely funded by Thailand's Ch. Karnchang Public Company.
As part of the deal, 90 percent of the electricity produced by the dam will be sold back to Thailand.
Many experts have criticised the government for putting the economy over the environment.
Laos deputy energy minister Viraphonh Virawong commented, “I am very confident that it will not have any adverse impacts on the Mekong River”.
