What’s so special about the Porsche 918 Spyder?
It’s still the only street-legal production vehicle to have completed the Nürburgring in less than seven minutes; it has a top speed of 210 mph; can (according to some sources) hit 0-60 in 2.2 seconds; and just 918 limited edition 2014 units have been manufactured.
For such a special car, Porsche has decided to produce a set of hardback books to honour the “passion, focus and engineering” that went into the 918.
In pictures
The trilogy begins with a picture book, packed with stunning photography from all the development phases of the Spyder. Each picture says a thousand words about the painstaking craftsmanship that went into each model, thanks to Munich-based photographer and designer Stefan Bogner. A celebrated car photographer, Bogner has already been published in the book “Escapes” and the magazine series “Curves”.
The story
The second volume tackles the narrative of the Spyder, directly from the keyboard of auto journalist Jürgen Pander. The tome is a journey behind the scenes of the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach, Germany, and guides the reader through race tracks, factory floors and planning meetings. The book also documents the words from key figures in Porsche’s development team, such as head of design Michael Mauer and handling expert Walter Röhrl.
The facts
Nothing would befit a German marque more than a collection of precise and detailed facts. Porsche expert Klaus-Achim Peitzmeier has painstakingly collated all the relevant figures and graphics, giving another angle into the technological marvel that is the 918 Spyder.
Many are heralding the all-new 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder as the greatest plug-in hybrid in the world. For less than half the price of a Bugatti Veyron, Porsche has created a true supercar experience with all of the roaring thrills, alongside the super silent E-Mode, which takes the vehicle about 20 miles on a full charge.
The car will set you back US $845,000, but the books are expected to retail at a more accessible $120. You can pick one up in your prefered language here.
