As part of its Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite auction in October, Sotheby’s Hong Kong will be selling the largest oval-shaped diamond ever to appear at auction for an estimated US $28-35 million.
The Magnificent Oval Diamond is the largest precious stone that has ever been graded by the Gemological Institute of America and boasts an incredible 118-carats, making it one of the most valuable D-Flawless diamonds in the world.
“Sotheby’s Hong Kong is extremely honoured to offer [for] sale a spectacular oval diamond of supreme importance, which is the largest D-Flawless diamond ever to appear at auction,” said Chin Yeow Quek, chairman of Sotheby’s Asian International Jewellery Division.
“Apart from its stunning size of 118.28 carats, the stone is also absolutely faultless and unbelievably beautiful.”
To date, only four other white diamonds over 100 carats with a similar clarity have been taken to auction, of which Sotheby’s has sold three. The Mouawad Splendour is the largest of these, which sold for US $12.7 million in 1990.
At 20 percent larger, the Magnificent Oval Diamond is expected to exceed the highest price ever paid for a white diamond at auction.
The stone will appear alongside Premier Blue, the world’s largest fancy vivid blue round diamond, at the Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite auction at Sotheby’s Hong Kong on October 7.
