Located in the heart of The Solent and accessible only by private ferry, Victorian-era Spitbank Fort may well be the UK’s most exclusive private island.
The former naval defence base, originally built in 1861, has undergone a dramatic US $4.6 million makeover to convert the fort into an eight-suite, five-star accommodation, complete with 16-person rooftop hot tub and private chef.
Originally built to repel Napoleon III’s navy, the fort’s guns have now been replaced by lux alternatives, including a steam room, Victory Bar and Officer’s Mess restaurant, where culinary delights are rustled together by experienced head chef, Nik Boyle.
A typical trip to the luxury hotel sees guests board their private ferry from a dedicated departure lounge at the Royal Clarence Marina in Gosport. On arrival, guests are served breakfast on the copper rooftop of the 1890s Lighthouse and have the opportunity to partake in a treatment at the spa.
Those who wish to play billiards are then invited to the hotel’s Recreation Rooms, followed by a leisurely aperitif at The Fire Pit, an exclusive outdoor area boasting unrivalled views across The Solent and Portsmouth coastline.
Staying true to its original styling, the fort features traditional arched brickwork and historic décor throughout, keeping in touch with its Victorian naval roots.
If you don’t like the idea of sharing the man-made island with fellow guests, the fort can be rented in its entirety for exclusive use; perfect for a girly getaway or the ultimate boys weekend.
Price: From US $625 per night for the Four Days of Luxury package, inc. daily excursions, specified meals and some alcoholic beverages
