From tarmac-eating R8s to turbo-charged GT-Rs, the colourful world of crime fighting has never been short of speedy (and pricey) motors. We’ve based our definitive ‘world’s fastest’ list on each of the following supercar’s top speed. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Dubai features quite prominently.
Bugatti Veyron
Top speed: 408kph
0-100kph: 2.46 secs
Engine: 8-litre W16 quad-turbocharged
Price: US $1.6 million
Introduced: 2014
Owned by: Dubai, UAE
When it comes to chasing down a criminal at high-speed, there’s only one steering wheel that you’ll want to sit behind. That of the Dubai police force’s Bugatti Veyron. Officially recognised as the fastest production car in the world (although it was recently outstripped by the $1.25m Hennessey Venom GT), the Veyron is part of a police super-fleet valued at over $4 million, which includes a Mercedes SLS, Aston Martin One-77 and Lamborghini Aventador. But more on that later.
Brabus Rocket
Top speed: 365kph
0-100kph: 3.7 secs
Engine: 6.3-litre V12
Price: US $437,000
Introduced: 2006
Owned by: Germany
Back in 2006, the Brabus CLS V12 S Rocket set the record for the fastest street legal saloon car in the world – clocking a mind-boggling 365kph on a track in southern Italy. Unsurprisingly, it was also the speediest motor owned by a police force at the time. German authorities introduced the supercharged Mercedes-Benz as part of its ‘Tune It Safe!’ programme, which aimed to promote safe and legal tuning practices in the country. One thing’s for sure, you wouldn’t want to try to outrun these flashing lights.
Aston Martin One-77
Top speed: 354kph
0-100kph: 3.7 secs
Engine: 7.3-litre V12
Price: US $1.9m
Introduced: 2013
Owned by: Dubai, UAE
The third entry on our list is another fine-tuned supercar from the glittering emirate of Dubai. Introduced to the force in 2013, the limited edition Aston Martin One-77 justifies its astronomical price tag by being one of only 77 ever made – enough to make James Bond blush. Boasting a strengthened version of the DB9s transmission and a full carbon fibre chassis, the supercar is widely considered the best performance Aston ever made. Perfect for catching a speedy criminal or two.
Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4
Top speed: 350kph
0-100kph: 2.9 secs
Engine: 6.5-litre V12
Price: US $441,600
Introduced: 2013
Owned by: Dubai, UAE
Last year saw the police force in the UAE build a wide collection of expensive supercars in a bid to improve Dubai’s roads, while simultaneously offering snap-happy tourists a unique photo opportunity. Undoubtedly one of the most popular on the fleet, the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 has proven to be a hot topic in the world’s media and has featured on television programs worldwide, including the UK’s Top Gear.
Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4
Top speed: 325kph
0-100kph: 3.2 secs
Engine: 5.2-litre V10
Price: US $250,000
Introduced: 2014
Owned by: Italy
Donated to the Italian Polizia earlier this week, the Huracán LP 610-4 is the latest supercar offering from Italian powerhouse Lamborghini. Introduced as a replacement for the Gallardo, the Huracán derives its name from the world of bullfighting, named after a famous breed known for its outstanding courage, unrelenting character and strong sense of attack. All characteristics that will come in handy when combating the country’s unlawful crooks.
