W Hotels is adding a little more après in Aspen with the announcement of the W Aspen. The hip and modern hotel brand will open their first North American alpine escape in 2017 along with The Sky Residences at W Aspen, both due to open in time for the ski season. The new property takes over from the former Sky Hotel and will be located at the base of Aspen Mountain, meaning snow sports and enthusiasts can let gravity take them all the way home, to one of the 82 guestrooms or six suites.
The large split-level Living Room continues W’s trend of replacing an ordinary hotel lobby with a social venue, and will introduce craft cocktails and gourmet cuisine to its dining venues. The hotel will feature a 1,600 square-foot outdoor patio and a 12,000 square-foot rooftop bar and pool, overlooking the mountain, offering an amazing year-round vista. The 11 “ski-in” Sky Residences will be made available for sale and boast similar views.
“As one of the most stunning and vibrant year-round resort towns in the world, Aspen is a destination that has long been on our wishlist,” said Anthony Ingham, the hotel chain’s brand’s global brand leader. “We are thrilled to bring the W lifestyle to Aspen while simultaneously reinventing the traditional notion of an alpine escape. We’re confident that combined with the brand’s unique programming and cutting-edge design, W Aspen will appeal to locals and international travellers alike.”
Long an enclave of America's rich and famous scenesters, Aspen is home to four distinct mountains and over 5,300 acres of terrain linked through one lift ticket. The Rocky Mountains city has hosted the Winter X Games for the past 14 consecutive years, boasting the number one “Superpipe” in North America. Popular summer sports include climbing, mountain biking, fly-fishing and white-water rafting, and a host of summer festivals return each year, including the Food & Wine Classic and the Aspen Music & Arts Festival.
