EVENT
The Hublot Polo Gold Cup in Gstaad, Switzerland, has established itself as one of the most important summer polo tournaments in Europe. It is also very important for the region of Gstaad, and provides great sport and entertainment during the summer season.
The competition, held from August 21–24, saw four teams of four players compete for the cup. The captains were mostly European players, but we did have professional players come in from South America — specifically from Argentina, where the best level of polo can be found.
AMBIENCE
We welcomed about 6,000 spectators in total, including 1,000 VIPs, making this year’s tournament especially crowded. We were lucky to have beautiful weather for the competition. It was reasonably hot, which made people come to see the matches. The cup was held at the Gstaad Saanen airport field of Polo Club Gstaad, with the breathtaking alpine scenery providing a spectacular backdrop.
RUB SHOULDERS WITH
Special guests mingled in the VIP marquee, including Princess Caroline’s son, Andrea Casiraghi, and Bernie Ecclestone. We also had the chance to welcome international singer Tara McDonald and Australian comedian,
Rob Spence.
STAY
Of course, the most luxurious hotel to
stay at during the event is the world-famous Gstaad Palace, which celebrates
its centenary this year. The hotel is one
of our Team Sponsors — Team Gstaad Palace actually won the tournament
this year. That said, it’s difficult to find a hotel you wouldn’t like. In Gstaad, everything is perfect.
DINE
It’s hard to recommend a top place to eat in Gstaad, as every single restaurant is happy to welcome the tournament and host its players and visitors. You can expect an incredible dining experience anywhere.
AFTER DARK
On Friday August 23, we hosted a gala night for 400 people in the VIP marquee, which was filled with black leather couches and coffee tables to create a relaxed atmosphere. Guests and polo players mingled over champagne and amazing food catered by the staff at Gstaad Palace, while being entertained by Rob Spence and a line-up of singers and musicians, who kept people on the dance floor until 5am.
MUST-DO
Polo is where sport and glamour combine, so make sure you wear appropriate day wear and save your most formal outfits for after dark. During the day, spectators dressed in casual sport-chic attire, then donned fabulous dresses and elegant formal wear at the VIP Gala night. I also recommend you extend your stay in Gstaad by a few days so you can have
some time to wind down and enjoy
the quiet and luxurious way of life.
