Once thought of as a humble snack for impoverished students, the grilled cheese sandwich has now entered the record books - New York City’s Serendipity 3 is now offering The Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich for US $214.
While it may not approach the dizzying cost of the one-off Glam Burger, and it may pinch your pocket to wash it down with The Gigi’s cocktail, the sandwich enters the Guinness World Record books as a regular menu item.
Created by Chef Joe Calderone, the sandwich is constructed from two thick slices French Pullman Champagne Bread, which is made with Dom Perignon and 24k edible gold flakes and buttered with thick layers of grass-fed white truffle butter.
Calderone added thick slices of Southern Italian Caciocavallo Podolico cheese, made from the Podolica cow, which famously feeds on aromatic grasses such as fennel, liquorice and juniper. There are 25,000 such cows but they only lactate during the months of May and June, ensuring the cheese is ultra rare.
The sandwich is then toasted and sliced into triangles before the edges are gilded with 24k edible gold.
Served on a Baccarat crystal "Mille Nuits" plate, the sandwich is sided with a Baccarat "Vega" glass filled with South African Lobster Tomato Bisque as a dipping sauce, swirled with creme fraiche and truffle oil. This bisque is made with San Marzano tomatoes from Italy and South African Lobster Tails.
"Grilled cheese is the ultimate comfort food and this grilled cheese is the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich," restaurant owner Stephen Bruce.
The 60-year-old eatery also offers a Golden Opulence Sundae for $1,000, which, like the Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich, needs to be ordered 48 hours in advance.
